The Winter is Past

For lo, the winter is past,
the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove
is heard in our land.

~Canticle of Canticles 2:11-12

See, and I thought that was from the Book of Ernie Harwell. . .

When I was in college, I participated on our dormitory floor's college bowl team. One bonus category we got was to name the author or title of the quoted work, and one of the quotes supplied was "the cry of the turtle is heard throughout the land." Being unfamiliar with that verse in the KJV, and knowing that turtles don't cry very loudly, I guessed at Lewis Carroll (hmmm ... was he related to our country's first bishop?). The audience thought it a hoot that the Bible thumper on the team missed a Bible reference. Not that they recognized it.
