Easter Wednesday

The past few days here have been quite snowy - maybe four or five inches when all was said and done this afternoon. This picture of a Byzantine procession is from Monday before the snow really started to pile up.

The Feast of the Annunciation has been moved in the Roman Rite from March 25 (yesterday) to March 31, because the 25th fell within the Easter Octave. The Byzantines though don't move the Feast for anything! Yesterday, therefore, was quite a celebration here. The Byzantine chapel is dedicated to the Annunciation, and was dedicated on this Feast just last year. We found out in the homily by the way that the chapel holds relics of Ss. Nicholas, John Chrysostom, Gregory the Great, and Barbara. Yesterday was also the 25th anniversary of one of our professor's consecration as a virgin. She was consecrated by then-Cardinal Ratzinger! After the Divine Liturgy we were all treated to quite an array of food, drink, and song in the Kartause.

Maria is enjoying Easter thoroughly! Here she is making a buck-toothed bunny face while eating her chocolate Easter bunny. And for dinner this evening, with Will and Anna back from Salzburg, Lisa made "drunken chicken." It looks perhaps a bit distasteful, but tasted quite good. The evaporating beer makes the chicken quite moist!

If the chapel is dedicated to the Annunciation, then they will have to acquire first-class relics of the Blessed Virgin and St. Gabriel!

Neat procession, by the way. I love the sacred backhoe!

If they had relics of either I'd be quite impressed!

The chicken looks only odd, not necessarily distasteful, and I'm sure was quite delicious. Meat of any sort cooked in beer usually is.
Maria is ADORABLE!
Big Daddy is silly to refer to the "sacred backhoe;" I had to look at the photo again to see it. It certainly is cool how the Byzantines put so much into their celebrations...may such be restored to the west!
We are enjoying Easter week with a break from school work, some fun outings, and lots of "Alleluia" singing. 1-2-3

Well, when you click on the picture to get the full-screen view, you can see how nicely the backhoe frames the crucifix and torches!
Silly indeed!

We tried using a lemonade can with a chicken once and that was also quite tasty...maybe next time try a combination of both lemonade and beer?

John-

What is all that construction stuff in the Courtyard? What is going on there? Also, I forgot to ask, how did you enjoy the Adventmarkt, and what was your impression of the Krampus'?

Boniface,
The rumor I've heard is that they are adding a brewery onto the hotel/restaurant portion of the Kartause.

The Adventmarkt was really fun - we had a kebop (sp?) as you suggested, and it was quite good. We managed to avoid running into a Krampus for the most part, we saw them one night, but we were there after they had finished their act and most of them had taken their heads off and were just standing around drinking gluehwine.

At the end of the Adventmarkt they gave away boxes of those little coffee mugs that have a picture of the Kartause and say Adventmarkt on the side.
