St. Lucy, Virgin, Martyr

Born at Syracuse in Sicily of noble parents, St. Lucy gave herself to Jesus and chose death rather than lose the incorruptible treasure of her virginity, in 303. Her name occurs in the Canon of the Mass.

Today we ran into Dan Hilker! He came over for dinner and we had some delicious hamburgers with pseudo-American buns. It was really great to see him; he'll be here for a couple more days before heading off to Roma.

Need I admit my own sin? I am envious of these young men who get to play with MY Maria! Just kidding... On another topic, we had a lovely celebration of St. Lucia's Day - 20 adults, 12 children, 6 Joys, and 1 guest from Ecuador - St. Lucy's Cats, punch, oj, cocoa, coffee - 3 little Lucia girls.
Let's keep Advent as a season of its own and Christmas as a high feast for TWELVE DAYS, followed by a grand closing on January 6, THE Epiphany!

Sounds like fun! Happy belated St. Lucia day to you and to all.

Speaking of keeping Advent - we have the first 12 tracks of Handel's Messiah (the words of the prophets foretelling the coming of Christ) playing almost continuously.

Then the rest of the playlist includes traditional Advent chants and hymns such as Rorate Coeli, Verbum Supernum, Angelus ad Virginem, Vox Clara, Veni Redemptor Gentium, Creator Alme Siderum, Alma Redemptoris Mater, and of course: Veni, Veni Emmanuel.

In a spirit of preparation and repentance mingled with joy and hope I wish you all a joyful remainder of this penitential season!

Hi John and Lisa!

Great idea. Music hath power!

Well, I'm sitting here copying out Fr. John Zuhlsdorf's translations and commentary on the Collects for daily Masses this Advent.

Have I recommended this blog to you yet? John, you'd love it, I think. It's called "What Does the Prayer Really Say?" (WDTPRS). I was struck by the clear truth in one of his translations, so in lieu of reading the stellar Gueranger every day, I thought I'd put into my head/heart the Church's message for Advent. This year, I especially wanted to know more clearly: how am I supposed to be oriented during this season? How can I, daily, celebrate Advent? What are the themes to return to when I get distracted? Fr. Z's translations and commentary are helping me with this.

Another thing I'm doing came from the 1st Advent commentary in my monthly "Word Among Us:" Watch! I asked the Lord to help me both WATCH and also to PERCEIVE Him. I also set up a little e-mail network with Jen, Christy, and two cousins in GR so we could report "sightings" of Jesus as we WATCH during Advent for Him moving somehow.

And I dropped by your family's St. Lucia day party. Lovely.

Hey, another Fr. Z fan! We love reading his blog. Meditating on the daily Collects of the Mass is a great idea.
